The 13th International Symposium on Teacher Education in East Asia

General outline

1. Main theme: "Challenges for the Next-Generation Education"

Teacher education is armed with a noble mission: to nurture human resources who shall be responsible for the development of the next generation. To this end, improving the quality of teacher education is a critical issue faced by all countries/regions of the world. Further, in light of accelerating globalization as well as technological innovations, school education in each country/region is confronted with various challenges. It is necessary to deal with not only improvements in content and method of education but also new challenges, such as cooperation and collaboration between schools and various players, and the shift of image or view of ideal teachers.

What is the future direction of colleges/universities of teacher education that assume the role of nurturing the next generation? In order to address this question, worldwide transmission of cutting-edge educational systems and studies of classroom teaching in countries/regions in East Asia are urgent issues that require attention.

On the other hand, in this fast-moving age, how public education should be is put to the test as East Asia faces a decreasing birthrate as well as an aging population, economic disparity, poverty, and other problems.

It is our hope that this symposium will offer an opportunity to raise ideas on issues concerning teacher education in the new era from East Asia to the rest of the world.
